Описание: M777: Army’s imported ULH

Failing to produce indigenous ULH, army has to look for export option in past. India had signed a deal with the US in 2016 for 145 M777 howitzers. Under the deal of $750 million, 25 guns were delivered by BAE Systems while the remaining 120 were to be assembled in India by Mahindra Defence in Faridabad, Haryana. As of November 2021, 89 howitzers have been delivered to Indian Army, 56 more M777 guns were expected to be delivered by June 2022.

The 155mm/39 Cal ULH has a range of 22.5km, which can further be extended to 30km using base bleed ammunition like M795. It can also fire Excalibur ammunition which gives it a range of 40KM.

The induction of the M777s has given a big boost to the army’s fire power against PLA. The army has deployed M777s in Ladakh, where India and China have been locked horns for over 2 years, and also in Arunachal Pradesh across where the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has stepped up its activities. The howitzer can be easily moved from one area to another depending on the requirement and we have seen it being even transported by Chinook as underslung load for swift deployment in high-altitude areas. They can be deployed in areas where heavier artillery gun cannot be deployed to terrain.

155mm/39 Cal ULH in Negative import list

As we all know that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) had already announced multiple negative lists of defence items which also includes 155mm,39 Cal Ultra-Light Howzitzer. The MoD has stopped importing the ULH since Dec 2020 which means imports of more BAE Systems M777 Ultra Lightweight Howitzers for the Indian Army will be no longer be possible.

However, Indian Army needs has huge requirement of artillery gun and the plan is to equip 169 artillery regiments with a mix of nearly 3,000 guns over the next decade. This is where the Kalyani Group comes to rescue.

Kalyani Ultra-Light Howitzer 155/39

The Kalyani Ultra-Light Howitzer 155/39 also called MArG(Mountain Artillery Gun) is touted as indigenous option of famous America M777 artillery gun. Weighing less than 4.5t, the gun can be air lifted via Chinook and can be transported to inaccessible terrains.

Kalyani Group has developed two versions of this gun. The all-titanium version of ULH weighs 4.8 tonnes and all-steel version of ULH which weighs 6.8-tonne. The advantage of Titanium being lightweight comes with the difficulty of maintenance. Steel is more malleable, easy to maintain, and of course cheap. A third variant of this gun is developed on the feedback from late CDS General Bipin Rawat. This was all-steel ULH mounted on an Ashok Leyland Mk.4 general utility truck for mobility in the mountainous terrain. MArG is the only artillery gun in its category that can be mounted on 4X4 wheeled platform.

Capability

The MArG is designed specifically for the mountainous terrain of North India. For improved accuracy and consistency, the gun features digital fire control.

The gun has two types of recoil system: conventional Recoil ULH and Advance Hybrid Recoil ULH. The Hybrid Recoil ULH is more advance than Conventional ULH as it incorporates state-of-the-art advanced recoil system, which further bringing down the weight of the gun to less than 4.5 tonnes

The ULH has a range of 22.4km with an unassisted artillery and 30km with an assisted artillery shell similar to that of M777. It has 2 modes of firing. In intense mode the gun can fire, 4 rounds per minute for 3mins. In sustained mode it can fire 1 or 2 rounds per minute and only limited by the tube temperature. The gun can be quickly brought into action in less than 3minutes and required a crew of 5 to operate. The Kalyani Group completed Internal Trials of the Ultralight 155mm,39 Cal and is undergoing trials by Indian Army.
