In the mid-19th century, the samurai warrior regime ended and a new government aggressively adopted Western culture. This had a great impact on the ancient five-line poems. This video introduces the turbulent times in Japan using 5 line short poems.
1. 父君よ
今朝はいかにと
手をつきて
問う子を見れば
死なれざりけり
Chichigimi yo
kesa wa ikani to
te o tsuki te
tou ko wo mireba
shinare zari keri
"Morning, father,
how are you feeling?"
My son asks kneeling down
with his hands on the floor
Now I can't die leaving him
2. 馬追虫の
ひげのそよろに
来る秋は
まなこを閉じて
想い見るべし
Umaoi no
hige no soyoro ni
kuru aki wa
manako o tojite
omoi miru beshi
● Like whiskers of grasshoppers
so slowly and secretly
autumn is approaching
So close your eyes
and catch its coming
3. もの忘れ
またうち忘れ
かくしつつ
生命をさえや
明日は忘れん
Mono wasure
mata uchi wasure
kaku shitsutsu
inochi o sae ya
asu wa wasuren
● Getting forgetful
so forgetful day by day
Tomorrow I might be
forgetting that I am
even alive
4. なにとなく
君に待たるる
ここちして
出でし花野の
夕月夜かな
Nani to naku

● Somehow, I feel you
somewhere waiting for me
I took myself farther
to the field of flowers
The evening moon is shining
5. 金色の
小さき鳥の
かたちして
銀杏散るなり
夕日の丘に

ichou chiru nari
yuuhi no oka ni
● Falling gingko leaves
in the form of little birds
shining like gold
on a hill illuminated by
the setting sun

働けどなお
我が生活
楽にならざり
ぢっと手を見る

● No matter how hard
I keep on working
Life not getting easier
I’m just staring at
my both hands
7. 友がみな
われよりえらく
見ゆる日よ
花を買い来て
妻としたしむ

hana o kai kite
tsuma to shitashimu
● On the days
when all my friends
look so much greater than me
I buy some flowers and go home
to spend the time with my wife

幼きどちの
ものがたり
葡萄のかげに
月かたぶきぬ
Osanaki wa

● A group of young children
gathering and chatting
under the vine trellis
The moon has hidden
behind the grapes
9.向日葵は
金の油を
身に浴びて
ゆらりと高し
日のちいささよ
Himawari wa
kin no abura o
mi ni abite
yurarito takashi
hi no chiisasa yo
● As if being bathed
in golden oil
the sunflower stretching out
trembling its top
The sun looks much smaller
10. 老ふたり
互いに空気と
なり合いて
有るには忘れ
無きを思わず
Oi futari
tagai ni kuuki to

aru ni wa wasure
naki o omowazu
● Two of us, aged couple
being like the air
so natural to be with
Forgetting its presence
not even imagining its absence
11. みちのくの
母のいのちを
一目見ん
一目見んとぞ
ただにいそげる

tadani isogeru
● Far to the hamlet in Tohoku
I hurried
just hurried up home
to see the last moment
before my mother is gone
12. 吾がもてる
貧しきものの
卑しさを
是(こ)の友に見て
耐えがたかりき
Waga moteru
mazushiki mono no
iyashisa o
kono tomo ni mite
taegata kari ki
● As reflected in the mirror
the meanness that I have
peculiar to only the poor
I found also in my dear friend
