Overweight or Obese individuals tend to eat too few calories as they diet and fail to build valuable muscle via resistance training, instead opting to spend their time doing cardiovascular exercise (running, elliptical, treadmill, dancing, Zumba, bicycle, etc). Ultimately, they tend to lose some weight and shrink in size, but fail to significantly lower their body fat percentage and improve their physique.
Another common problem with those looking to lose weight is the failure to control their caloric intake. So although they may properly align their exercise with their goals, they fail to align their nutrition. These individuals tend to gain weight and get "bulky".
Those looking to gain weight (hard gainers) often fail to consume enough calories to support muscle gain, or even worse destroy any caloric surplus they may have achieved via their diet by doing excessive cardiovascular exercise.
