Sughanda and Ganesh are happy to welcome their five daughters-in-law—Malti, Neeta, Shweta, Radha, and Nitya—into their family. During their first cooking ritual, all five prepare delicious dishes. Everyone appreciates their efforts, but Malti’s moong dal halwa receives the most praise. Gradually, the other four daughters-in-law begin feeling insecure and start comparing themselves with Malti.

The situation worsens when family members repeatedly praise Malti’s cooking. Sughanda also becomes worried after hearing the daughters-in-law discussing whether her property and affection might eventually go to Malti. In anger, Sughanda tells them that whoever serves her sincerely will receive her love and property. This unintentionally turns the daughters-in-law against one another.

Soon, Shweta brings an old iron kadai from her mother, believing it will make her food better. Neeta brings a brass kadai, Nitya brings a copper one, and Radha brings a steel kadai. Malti eventually brings a simple German kadai. The five women start treating their kadais as a way to prove who can cook the best.

They begin preparing separate dishes for every meal, resulting in excessive food, wasted ingredients, increased household expenses, and eventually even separate kitchens. Sughanda becomes deeply unhappy because her daughters-in-law are competing instead of living like a family.

Her friend Leela helps her realize that Sughanda’s earlier statement about love and property created this insecurity. Sughanda then gathers the five women and sincerely apologizes. She tells them they are not merely daughters-in-law but her five daughters, and that her love will never be divided.

The family finally creates a system where all five kadais are used, but the daughters-in-law cook together and prepare only the required amount of food.

The story ends with the family united. The five kadais remain different, but the love behind them becomes one. The main lesson is that family relationships are not a competition. True happiness comes from cooperation, love, understanding, and unity—not from proving who is better.
