I recently discovered RetroAchievements, which not only adds achievement support to many old games but even time attack leaderboards for individual tracks or levels. Here you can see me setting a new lap record on every Circuit track (Reverse) in the PS2 version of Need for Speed Underground.
Timeline:
0:00 Olympic Square Reverse
1:10 Atlantica Reverse
2:14 Inner City Reverse
3:20 Stadium Reverse
4:36 National Rail Reverse
5:43 Market Street Reverse
7:13 Terminal Reverse
8:23 Port Royal Reverse
9:28 Car Setup
NFS Underground is one of my favorite racing games of all time and it was the first video game that I ever played competitively, all the way back in 2005, so I was excited when I saw that RetroAchievements not only has achievements but also time attack leaderboards for it.
There are now at least 3 websites that offer leaderboards for the game and each one has upsides and downsides.
Speedrun.com has a big userbase and you can use the PC version of the game but your times won't get detected automatically and instead have to be tediously submitted manually with video proof
Virtuallenge.com has automatic detection and even telemetry and you can use the PC version of the game but it has a very small userbase even years after I promoted it
RetroAchievements.com has automatic detection and a reasonable userbase but you have to use the PS2 version of the game via emulator
The PS2 version that you have to use for RetroAchievements has worse graphics and performance than the PC version but overall I probably enjoyed this option the most so far, since there is automatic detection of your times and with around 100 players on the leaderboards the times feel at least somewhat meaningful. And maybe my videos will encourage even more people to join.
In this video you can see my laps on all the Reverse Circuit tracks. I have almost no competitive experience on the Reverse layouts, since they weren't used for league play back in the days. On most of them I still beat the existing record fairly quickly though, with just one exception. Atlantica Reverse had by far the strongest record of all the Circuit and Sprint tracks on the site. That one took me over 2 hours to beat.
