By tracking 22 million GPS data points across 6.3 lakh kilometers, the team uncovered a broken cleanup system: Delhi faces a massive 80% shortage of mechanical sweeping machines, and to make matters worse, a third of the active fleet is hogged by just 15 VIP routes. Meanwhile, heavily polluted neighborhoods are left completely neglected, forcing under-equipped sanitation workers to clear blocked, broken machines by hand in hazardous night shifts. Environmental experts warn that temporary fixes like water sprinkling aren't working, arguing that Delhi needs to follow the successful Indore model by massively scaling up sweeping machines, paving unpaved roads and planting three-layer green belts to actually trap the dust.
