According to DPS, an organized auto theft ring was targeting luxury and high-performance vehicles like Dodge Chargers and Hellcats. Suspects would scout apartment complexes, return the next night to steal the car, then either drive it into Mexico, swap VIN numbers, or completely tear it apart and sell the parts online at bargain prices.

Investigators recovered 17 stolen vehicles worth nearly $750,000, including one Charger Scat Pack that had been fully disassembled inside a Valley home. DPS says thieves are using advanced technology — in some cases tablets plugged into a car’s diagnostic port — to start vehicles and disable alarms within seconds.

Authorities warn drivers to lock their cars, cover the OBD port, and use steering wheel locks to make vehicles harder targets. DPS also says buyers should be cautious when shopping for car parts online — if the deal sounds too good to be true, it may be stolen and could lead to criminal charges.
