I also think its worth noting that despite this era being known for kidnappings and serial murders, many ethnographers and researches believe (according to the actual data and number of children reported missing) that the “stranger danger panic” of the 70s and 80’s was not the widespread phenomenon of missing women and children that ppl made it out to be. It’s believed that a handful of real occurrences snowballed into an exaggerated, media-driven hysteria, that contributed to Reagan era “tough on crime polices”, ultimately giving way to beginnings of mass incarceration under the guise of protecting children.
