From deep in the heart of the West Virginia hills comes the mel-
odious haunting sounds of one of the oldest instruments known, the
•'hammered dulcimer, as played by Worley Gardner.
The hammered” dulcimer is an instrument probably originating in
western Asia. it is the predecessor of all known percussion stringed
instruments and is referred to in the Bible. Its European usage was
predominantly in south central Europe. It was brought to America by
early settlers and was distributed along the Appalachian Mountain
range. Its usage extended from lower southwest Pennsylvania, east-
ern. Ohio, West Virginia. North and South Carolina. Kentucky and
Georgia.
The instruments were built by local craftsmen for the area in which
they lived. These were copied by others in surrounding areas. The
many different styles found reflect the area of their origin and the
particular taste of the craftsmen of the area. Throughout the Ap-
palachian Mountains the "hammered” dulcimer became very useful in
providing entertainment for all types of social functions such as
parties, square dances, socials, etc.
Written communications of music was for the most part unknown thus
the music played was practically all done from memory. The songs
and melodies reflected ballads set to music and adaptations of tunes
that were remembered from earlier times and passed on from generation
to generation.
Worley has been playing mountain music for some thirty years and
he now brings you his version of some of the old time mountain folk
and square dance tunes of the yester-years played in the old tradi-
tional “hammered” dulcimer style.
A lost art now being revived.
