Lithium fluoride (LiF) is a single-crystal material known for its
exceptional optical, mechanical, and thermal properties, making it
highly useful in various scientific, industrial, and optical
applications. Below are the key properties of LiF:
Optical Properties:
Transmission Range: LiF transmits across a wide spectral range from
the extreme ultraviolet (VUV) region at 121 nm (hydrogen Lyman-alpha
line) to the infrared (IR) region, extending up to 6–9 µm
Refractive Index: Approximately 1.392 at 0.6 µm. Its low refractive
index makes it useful in applications requiring minimal reflection
losses
Birefringence and Polarization Control: LiF exhibits weak
birefringence, and its optical elements are often oriented along
specific crystallographic axes to optimize performance
Mechanical and Thermal Properties:
Hardness: LiF has a Knoop hardness of 102 and a Mohs hardness around
3–3.5, meaning it is relatively soft and susceptible to scratches
Thermal Expansion: The thermal expansion coefficient is approximately
37 x 10⁻⁶/°C, which contributes to its stability over a wide
temperature range
Mechanical Stability: Despite its optical clarity, LiF is relatively
fragile and prone to mechanical and thermal shocks, requiring careful

Melting Point: It melts at approximately 855°C, allowing for

Dielectric Constant: LiF has a dielectric constant of around 9.1,
