The Orient Express name is shorthand for luxury, and the experience of taking it was memorialised by writers like Graham Green and Agatha Christie, specifically in her 1934 book Murder on the Orient Express. Later, James Bond films would do the same.
By the 1970s the popularisation of air travel had made it difficult for the company to compete, ultimately leading the Orient Express service to be discontinued.
However, an appetite for luxury train travel remained and by 2016 plans were being made to relaunch the Orient Express rail service on the original route from Paris.
