Thousands of homes in Donegal and Mayo were built using defective blocks and concrete from suppliers. Mica is a mineral that is found in the ground naturally but the maximum amount allowed in Irish building regulations is 1%. Engineers tests have revealed in many homes that this figure is in the double digits 40% to 50% in some cases, with also low cement content found in blocks as well. When the building get wet with the rain and frost this causes the concrete blocks to swell and crumble leaving the building very unsafe and in a lot of case demolition is the only solution.
It's not just family homes that are affected, businesses, community and government buildings are all affected. With no building controls enforced this has led to homes, surgeries, hospitals, schools, community centres, churches, shops, old peoples homes, etc..... to name just a few to crumble.
Several years ago the government funded the pyrate issue (pyrate being another mineral found in the ground) 100% rebuilding costs, storage of peoples belongings, and rental accommodation while they were homeless. In 2020 the government left the people of Donegal with a 90/10 scheme where by in theory you paid 10% of the rebuilding costs yourself which did not cover, storage or renting out other accommodation. The reality is the 90/10 scheme is not 90/10 your average family home must pay €100,000 to rebuild their home through no fault of their own when the government did not enforce the legislation in place already. Families to get on the scheme must pay from €6500 upwards just to get on the scheme alone.
At the time of this video approx 7000 homes have officially come forward in Donegal alone, however this is just the tip of the iceberg. Second homes, businesses, and community buildings are not covered under this current scheme. Pensioners who have no means of earning, families who are already paying mortgages, are expected to pay out again through no fault of their own.
The families of Donegal are looking for no more than what was offered to the people of Dublin, we do not want to be treated as second class citizens, there should be no discrimination between families in Dublin or elsewhere. We fully support the families in Dublin getting redress and we are looking for the same. Reports are coming in of family homes as far back as the early 1980's being built with defective blocks, as at the time of this video the following counties are affected by defective blocks, Donegal, Sligo, Louth, Mayo, Clare, Limerick, some parts of Galway and new cases being reported in the Dublin area.
This is one of the biggest national scandals to rock the people of Ireland. Families cannot follow the block suppliers they have no insurance, you cannot get a loan to rebuild your home from the banks even though the banks were bailed out for billions at the Celtic tiger crash by the people of Ireland. Your building can no longer be insured either.
The people of Donegal and other counties are now looking for 100% redress and nothing else and to be treated equally.
