Mercy is closely linked to a broken heart because God responds with compassion to those who humble themselves before Him, as seen in Psalms 51:17, which teaches that God does not reject a broken and contrite heart.
Biblical brokenness opens the door to mercy because it acknowledges total dependence on God, and Isaiah 57:15 shows that God dwells with the lowly in spirit to revive them.
When a heart is broken in repentance, mercy flows as restoration, because Lamentations 3:31–32 explains that although God allows sorrow, His compassion is great.
Mercy also brings healing to the brokenhearted, and Psalms 147:3 reveals that God binds up the wounds of those crushed in spirit.
Jesus reinforces this connection by promising comfort and mercy to the broken, as declared in Matthew 5:3–4, where the poor in spirit are called blessed.
Therefore, biblical brokenness is not weakness but a pathway to mercy, because James 4:6 teaches that God gives grace to the humble but resists the proud.
