Dave Brubeckʼs iconic composition which featured on his 1959 album ʻTime Outʼ, has been carefully scored for standard saxophone quartet by Jim Fieldhouse.
Brubeck, often regarded as one of the leading artists in the cool jazz movement was inspired by the sound and rhythmic feel he heard when he encountered a group of Turkish street musicians. Blue Rondo was based upon the Turkish Aksak rhythm, and is written in 9/8 grouped as 2+2+2+3 for three bars followed by a 3+3+3 bar.
In a conversation between Brubeck and these Turkish musicians they reportedly said that the aksak was to them what the blues was to western musicians, and so the title for the piece “Blue Rondo a la Turk” came about.
This arrangement requires attention to detail, rhythmic precision and good dynamic control in order to drive the music forward with a light and lively feel and build to the big moments in the score where the ensemble can really let rip!
