In this video, we head to Hinton, West Virginia, for the 24 Hours of Appalachia: Miners and Loggers Delight. These 24-hour rallies take place across Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky, and are part of Back Roads of Appalachia—an organization dedicated to bringing tourism dollars into the region through motorsport. Along the way, they’ve raised money for charity, supported local communities, and built an amazing network of like-minded riders and drivers.

The format is simple but brutal: you have 24 hours to complete the course, usually between 500–600 miles. You’re provided a GPX track with a start, finish, checkpoints, and sometimes bonus stops. From there, it’s on you to manage fuel, food, and pacing. To keep things fair, rallies enforce a 35 mph maximum moving average speed, tracked by virtual checkpoints and minimum entry times. That might sound slow—but I promise, it’s not.

This year’s route consisted of three clockwise loops, with loop two repeated as loop four. And naturally—loop two was the hardest of them all.

While these events are about having fun, they are also a great opportunity to raise some money for charity. Each rally has a title charity and this time it was Wheeling for Hope. The event welcomes everyone: dual-sport and adventure motorcycles, side-by-sides, Jeeps, trucks, even Subarus. Classes are divided by vehicle type (bike, SxS, full-size) and skill level (A, B, C, or Teams). It’s not a race—it’s an endurance and navigation challenge.

I finished on my Husqvarna FE501s in 15 hours, with a moving average of 34 mph and just 19 minutes of total stopped time. The key is simple: keep moving. At the last rally, I ran my Tenere 700—loved every minute of it—but this time the dual-sport made sense. Bikes at the event ranged from DRZ400s, KLX300s, CRF300s, Tenere 700s, and Triumph Scramblers, to the Kove 450/800 Rally, KTM 1190s, and even a BMW R1200GS. And yes—the GS finished!

The attrition rate is always high: 180 rigs started, only 80 finished. Just crossing that finish line is an accomplishment.
