The highs and lows of bipolar 2 disorder

Описание: Bipolar 2 disorder is described as episodes of hypomania and depression – similar to bipolar 1 disorder, but these phases are less severe. In this video, Luke MacDonald, third-year medical student in Miramichi, talks to us about the highs and lows of living with bipolar 2 disorder.

Bipolar 2 disorder can be difficult to diagnose, because when these patients are in their hypomanic phases, they generally feel good. But hypomania has its negative effects as well – impaired judgement, high-risk behaviours, and substance use are also a part of these heightened phases. Depressive episodes accompany these as well, and when a cycle of these two stages is noticed in an individual, bipolar 2 disorder will be considered.

In addition to its symptoms, Luke covers the connection between bipolar 2 disorder and accompanying mental health conditions, such as anxiety. Treatment, support, and resources for those living with bipolar 2 disorder are shared as well.
