The Pallava dynasty was a South Indian dynasty that ruled parts of present-day Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh from the 3rd century CE to the 9th century CE. The dynasty was founded by King Simhavishnu, who was a vassal of the Satavahana Empire.
The Pallavas were known for their patronage of the arts, literature, and architecture. They were also great maritime traders and established a strong navy that controlled trade routes in the Indian Ocean. The Pallavas are credited with the development of the Dravidian style of temple architecture, which is characterized by intricate carvings and ornate sculptures.
The Pallava dynasty reached its zenith under the reign of Narasimhavarman I, also known as Mamalla, who conquered many neighboring kingdoms and extended his empire's influence across the Indian subcontinent. Mamalla was also a patron of the arts and commissioned many great works of literature and architecture.
The Pallava dynasty declined in the 9th century CE due to internal conflicts and external invasions by the Chola and Pandya dynasties. However, their legacy continues to be felt in South India, particularly in the form of their magnificent temple architecture, which remains some of the most impressive and revered in the region.
