Hopwood Hall Estate: The Community Speaks Out

An emergency public meeting was called in Middleton, England, to discuss the urgent situation at Hopwood Hall Estate.

For those who have been following the decade-long ancestral journey of Hopwood DePree and the dedicated community volunteers and heritage professionals, as they restore this 600-year-old historic estate here on YouTube…there has been a tragic turn of events. Recently and without warning, the Council made the shocking decision to revoke access to Hopwood Hall Estate to Hopwood, the volunteers and the local community.

This devastating news only came to light when a media outlet approached Hopwood for his reaction, and later he was notified the gates had been locked and a notice posted. Despite numerous attempts to speak to the opposing councillors, at the time of this video’s release, we have yet to hear from them.

We are still left asking, “Why?”.

Hopwood Hall Estate had been a prisoner of bureaucracy for decades, inaccessible to the public for over 30 years, shackled by red tape, and at the brink of ruin. This all happened under the Council’s ownership and it seemed as though the last remaining historic property in the area would end its life as a ruin.

That was until this most recent rescue project commenced in 2017 led by Hopwood DePree and the Hopwood Foundation Friends who were compelled to step in and try to rescue it - with a vision to make the hall a vibrant hub for the community.
