Odisha is grappling with a critical shortage of doctors, as revealed in the State Assembly by Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling. According to the official reply to Congress MLA Pavitra Saunta, the state requires 1 doctor per 1,000 people based on WHO standards. However, Odisha currently has only 1 doctor for every 1,265 people, and out of 15,793 sanctioned doctor positions, 4,607 remain vacant. Additionally, 1,459 doctors are pursuing higher studies across various districts. This shortage impacts public healthcare delivery and urgent attention is needed to strengthen Odisha’s medical infrastructure.
