Chinese President Jiang Zemin arrived at Langley Air Force Base late Monday evening to begin the first leg of his U-S tour on the mainland.

Jiang will spend Tuesday touring colonial Williamsburg before going on to a meeting with President Bill Clinton Tuesday night.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin traded in his Hawaiian lei for a colonial march Monday evening when he arrived in Virginia from Honolulu.

About forty Chinese exchange students from a nearby college greeted him with a welcoming banner and American and Chinese flags.

A fife and drum corps in uniform played an 18th century march to set the tone for Jiang's first day on the mainland.

The Chinese leader will spend Tuesday touring Virginia's colonial capital Williamsburg for a history of American democracy.

Williamsburg has been restored to its 18th century appearance.

Afterwards, Jiang travels to Washington for a preliminary meeting with President Clinton in his private quarters.

Jiang and Clinton are expected to try to iron out some of their differences before a much anticipated summit on Wednesday.
