I grew up in a broken home. From a very young age, I learned how to survive on my own. There was no one to rely on, no shoulder to lean on—just me, trying to make it through each day. As I entered high school, I looked for escape wherever I could find it. Alcohol and smoking became my comfort, my way of numbing the pain I didn’t know how to face.
My life fell into a destructive pattern: I worked, got paid, and spent everything on habits that slowly destroyed me. Week after week, I felt trapped in a cycle I couldn’t break. One night, while drunk, I was mugged. I thought that would be my wake-up call—but it wasn’t. I kept returning to the same lifestyle.
Then came the car accident.
That night everything changed. I could have died. Deep inside, I knew my survival wasn’t just luck. It was a warning call to turn back before it was too late.
In 2018, I had come to Fulton College to study business, but at the time I struggled with what I considered the “strange beliefs” of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. I argued with my teachers, resisted their teachings, and eventually ran away. I thought returning to my old life would be easier.
It wasn’t.
After the crash, I fell into deep depression. Guilt weighed heavily on me, and suicidal thoughts filled my mind. Yet even in that darkness, there was a gentle whisper in my heart saying, “You’re going to be okay.” I didn’t understand it then, but today I believe that voice was the Holy Spirit.
I wasn’t reading my Bible or attending church, but I never stopped praying. Prayer was all I had left. It was the one truth from my childhood that I still held onto—that God was listening.
