Many students of Carnatic music find the improvisational elements (manodharma sangeetham) a little daunting. Here are excerpts from a fun group exercise by Vidya Subramanian and some of her senior students from across the globe. Watch them try a spontaneous rendition of Mahalakshmi ashtakam slokas in a free-flowing ragamalika format. This activity aims to de-mystify manodharma and help students at the threshold take a bold first step.
