Cherokee Ridge (Lover’s Leap) is an original song and still-image slideshow written by Dave Grigsby.
This song was inspired by a story passed down to me by my cousins about Lover’s Leap, a real place in Virginia. Long before asphalt, guardrails, or scenic overlook signs, the cliffs were wrapped in legend and spoken of in quiet tones.
The most commonly told tale goes like this:
A Native American man — often said to be Cherokee or from a local Appalachian tribe — fell deeply in love with a young white woman, the daughter of a settler. Their love was real, but the world around them wasn’t ready for it.
Her family forbade the relationship.
His people warned him against crossing tribal lines.
Still, they met in secret beneath the trees and near the cliffs, where the wind carried their promises and the mountains kept their silence. When the truth finally came out, both families demanded an end. Faced with a life apart — and believing death kinder than separation — the lovers climbed to the high cliff overlooking the valley.
Holding hands, they chose each other… and stepped into legend.
Some versions say they leapt together.
Others say he jumped first, and she followed.
A few claim only one leapt, and the other lived on, haunted.
No names.
No dates.
Just the echo.
Set to a slow ceremonial drumbeat, this piece is meant to be experienced at an unhurried pace, letting the music, images, and silence carry the story.
