Case Study: EMiS

Описание: Enterprising Maths in Scotland (EMiS) is a national challenge that sees more than 200 third- and fourth-year pupils from 52 Scottish schools come together to compete for the title of EMiS Champions.

The EMiS final is funded and supported by the IFoA Foundation in partnership with the IFoA Scottish Board and the Scottish Mathematical Council.

The event takes place in November in the exciting environs of Glasgow Science Centre. Four varied and challenging rounds of problem solving, logic puzzles, practical challenges and team-work are tackled by the determined and talented school students.

In 2023, Eilidh Robertson, President of Glasgow Actuarial Students' Society opened the day with a talk about her career journey, and commented it was “a huge honour to be able attend and speak to the bright and talented mathematicians (and hopefully actuaries) of the future we have in Scotland.”

Dr Ian Sharpe from Heriot-Watt University presented the prizes, and said, ”The finalists had a great time solving problems, competing in maths games and racing across the science centre to get their answers checked ahead of other teams. It was a pleasure to represent the Scottish Board and the IFoA at this event, which is an opportunity for us to share our love of maths with talented youngsters.”

The profession was also represented by student actuary volunteers and there was considerable interest in IFoA careers material from teachers and pupils.

Teachers said, "“The event is quality - it is clearly supported well by the sponsors and the input from the actuaries seems to have given our kids food for thought about how they could use their maths in the future.”

Leader of the IFoA Scottish Board, Caitlin Stronach said, “It’s such a wonderful event seeing so many kids, come together from across Scotland, to have fun and get excited about maths. I’m so proud and happy that we’re able to support it.”

This year the EMiS silver salver for 1st place went to the well deserving team from Boroughmuir High School who were crowned EMiS 2023 champions! Congratulations to all the schools and budding mathematicians who took part.
