A traveling family in the Mongolian taiga—on horseback, trotting, even galloping. This is the adventure we, Mila and Asier, along with our two daughters Uxue (12) and Garazi (9), share with you in several episodes.
22 days and 465 km on horseback through the mountains and taiga, from Lake Khovsgol to the Siberian border, all the way to the camps of the reindeer herders: the Tsaatan.
In episode four, we show you days six and seven of the expedition. We leave Renchinlkhümbe behind to cross the Darhad Depression from south to north. Long ago, this area held a large lake fed by glaciers from the surrounding mountains. Its landscape is a mix of open steppe and forested hills dominated by Siberian larch. This dynamic region is home to over 300 wetlands, including ponds, peat bogs, and rivers. It is also the habitat of the nomadic Dharkat ethnic group.
Two days of travel through breathtaking scenery—galloping across open land, visiting one of these herder families, and even encountering a free-roaming herd of Bactrian camels. Our goal: to reach the base of the Sayan Mountains, which we’ll explore in future episodes.
