Awapuni School students dressed as their favourite book characters to celebrate the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults yesterday. Library team leader Janine Bava said bringing the book characters to life in the annual parade was a highlight on the school calendar.

“This year is especially exciting, as our school hall has been renovated just in time for this event to take place.”
The library is at the heart of Awapuni School and provides a modern learning environment for all of our students, says Ms Bava.
Reading books was just one of many activities enjoyed at the library, she said.
There are interactive books and games, a creative colouring and craft centre, book reviews, board games, chess challenges, computers and a place for students to hang out and chat.
“Our school librarian Miss Hawes leads a team of student librarians who are on duty daily to support their peers.
The tuakana–teina relationship is an integral part of our school community, providing positive role models for peers and younger buddies.”
The parade coincided with the New Zealand Book Awards winners being announced on Wednesday night. Christchurch writer and illustrator Gavin Bishop took the top honour for his non-fiction book, Aotearoa: The New Zealand Story.
Judge Jeannie Skinner called the book “masterful” and said they had never seen anything quite like it in New Zealand children’s publishing.
The Children and Young Adult book awards event was held at the marae at Te Papa in Wellington, with a group of lucky students attending and getting to meet and hear from the writers in person.
