The beauty and importance of dark skies and natural night environment, and the growing problem of light pollution and how it impacts life. A quick presentation at National Geographic headquarters in Washington DC. Each year, the National Geographic Society recognizes individuals who lead a new age of exploration through science, education, conservation, technology, and storytelling. I was honored to receive the 2022 Wayfinder Award during the Explorers Festival. The opening speaker in this video is Alex Moen, the Chief Explorer Engagement Officer at the society.
This is one of the most notable awards I received since the 2009 Lennart Nilsson Award in Stockholm (the world’s most prestigious science photography award at the time). I have been working with NatGeo since 2012. My contribution to the organization expanded when I moved to the US in 2015. NatGeo includes two major components: NatGeo Partners which runs the magazines, TV channels, and all digital platforms and is owned by Walt Disney. The other component is the National Geographic Society, a nonprofit founded in 1888 that support explorers and ground-breaking research and journalism with grants. A part of this support comes from NatGeo Partners revenue.
