A clutch in a manual car is used to smoothly transfer power from the engine to the wheels. Clutch has two separate discs, the one connected to the engine and the other one connected to the wheels. The engine disc is moving disc and the one that moves the wheels is the static or stationary disk until it's engaged with rotating disc at the time the 2 discs join. When you raise the clutch the two discs will join and if the clutch pedal is let upwards suddenly you will jolt or stall.
You will avoid the jerk if you gradually join the discs to the friction, so the moving disc slowly and gently engages static one, and with acceleration increases the speed of both discs making the wheels rotate faster until it's time to shift to a higher gear.
For tips on when and how to change gears in a manual car and why, keep an eye on this channel. This a great rough guide for learner drivers.
