I was there and I remember it so well. Your footage is great. I remember meeting Col. Duane Noll and thinking how cool these SR71 pilots were!

I think that particular display was a more gentle affair because the year before at the 1987 Air Fete the SR-71 was overstressed during the display ..... He's on Facebook .....!!!!

Action from RAF Mildenhall in 1988 - rather disappointing 'long range' display by shy Blackbird SR-71 pilot took it miles out of the way, even for my zoom lens video camera, compare the footage to my one of the Vulcan beating up the runway and touch and go.

I've just been told it costs $200,000 an hour for avgas, so we should be grateful for just seeing her in the air, thanks to my informant Adam for that piece of info - also heard that the Blackbird that putting on a ripping performance a year earlier was found to have been overstressed after being handled like a fighter jet.

After the show I got some good shots of the space gear worn by its crew and some nice shots of Major Duane Noll signing autographs - where do you suppose Duane is now - just been informed he is to be found on Facebook!!

The Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird" was an advanced, long-range, Mach 3+ strategic reconnaissance aircraft, say Wikipedia

It was developed as a black project from the Lockheed A-12 reconnaissance aircraft in the 1960s by the Lockheed Skunk Works.

Clarence "Kelly" Johnson was responsible for many of the design's innovative concepts. During reconnaissance missions the SR-71 operated at high speeds and altitudes to allow it to outrace threats.

If a surface-to-air missile launch was detected, the standard evasive action was simply to accelerate and outrun the missile.

The SR-71 served with the U.S. Air Force from 1964 to 1998. Of the 32 aircraft built, 12 were destroyed in accidents, and none lost to enemy action.

The SR-71 has been given several nicknames, including Blackbird and Habu, the latter in reference to an Okinawan species of pit viper.[5] Since 1976, it has held the world record for the fastest air-breathing manned aircraft, a record previously held by the YF-12.[6][7][8]
