In 1905, Bethlehem Steel's own physicians began documenting it. Progressive hearing loss in hammer men and heaters, attributed to hammer noise, filed in the company's medical records.
Nothing changed for sixty-four more years.
This is the story of the Nasmyth steam hammer at the largest forge shop in North America — the machine that forged battleship armor, railroad axles, and Navy drive shafts, and the men who stood within ten feet of a 35-ton ram, shift after shift, while the company measured what it was doing to them and kept running the floor anyway.
The records were kept. The harm was documented. The law hadn't caught up yet.
