Let's Talk Books: A Brief History of Living Forever by Jaroslav Kalfař - A Modern Czech Masterpiece

Описание: You should read A Brief History of Living Forever, a novel by Jaroslav Kalfař. This book provides a great lesson in pitting character's desires against each other -- and as that concept is one of the basic building blocks of conflict you may be surprised at how many authors forget to use one of the most important tools in the writing toolbox. But here, we have a primary plot set in 2030 (that's growing less speculative by the day) and a flashback plot AND frame story (a complete retelling of Karel Čapek's War With the Newts no less) set in the late 70's and early 80's. Like many other Czech works, things go from bad to worse for the protagonist, but in this story death is only the beginning. You may know this author for his more famous Spaceman of Bohemia (also a Netflix movie), but I'd argue this follow up, A Brief History of Living Forever, is the better book.

Although Asher is a solo practitioner attorney who primarily does public interest work in criminal and family law, he is also a former high school English teacher that always pushed his students to think critically and consider the world around them for what it is instead of what they are told. He reads a lot, often as a palate cleanser for work, and is currently (still!) working on publishing his first novel.
