I start this episode in the town of Bega, checking out the local cheese factory before hitting the road toward the Snowy Mountains and Mount Kosciuszko. What I expected to be a relaxed summer drive quickly turns into one of the toughest nights I’ve had on the road.
After driving through the Great Dividing Range and stopping in Jindabyne, I camp in Kosciuszko National Park during brutal weather — freezing winds, rain and ice. Completely underprepared for how cold it would get, I barely sleep through the night and pack up the next morning with numb hands.
While trying to dry out my setup in Jindabyne, a sudden gust of wind destroys my awning, forcing me to stop, rethink the trip and make a tough call. After breakfast and some time to reset, I head up to Charlotte Pass — where, on the first day of Australian summer, it starts snowing.
Driving through a full snowstorm in the mountains becomes an unexpected highlight and a much-needed lift after a rough start to the day. From there, I make the decision to head back to Canberra to replace damaged gear and reset before continuing the journey.
This episode is an honest look at solo travel in Australia — the lows, the unexpected wins, and learning to adapt when things don’t go to plan.
If you enjoy real solo travel, Australian road trips, 4x4 touring and life on the road, subscribe and follow the journey.
