Welcome to the final section of Unit 1 in your Grade 12 Geography series! 🌍🛠️
This lesson covers Unit 1.4: Major Geological Processes. Having established the concepts of plate tectonics and plate movement, we now focus on the specific physical processes that are driven by these forces and which actively shape the Earth's surface and landscape.
What You'll Learn
This unit is crucial for understanding the dynamic nature of our planet's surface. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
Distinguish Forces: Distinguish between Endogenic (Internal) Forces and Exogenic (External) Forces of the Earth, and explain how they work together to create landforms.
Endogenic Processes: Explain the major internal geological processes and the landforms they create:
Folding (Orogeny): The bending of rock layers due to compressional forces, leading to the formation of fold mountains (e.g., Anticlines and Synclines).
Faulting (Tectonics): The fracturing of the Earth's crust due to tensional or compressional forces, resulting in features like Rift Valleys (e.g., the East African Rift Valley) and Block Mountains.
Volcanism: The eruption of magma onto the surface, forming volcanic landforms (e.g., Erta Ale and Dallol in Ethiopia).
Earthquakes: The sudden release of energy due to movement along fault lines.
Exogenic Processes: Explain the major external geological processes that modify landforms:
Weathering: The decomposition and disintegration of rocks in place.
Erosion: The removal and transportation of weathered material by agents like water, wind, and ice.
Deposition: The laying down of transported material, creating new landforms.
Analyze Geological Events: Explain the major geological processes in the formation of continents and specific features in the Horn of Africa.
Evaluate Impact: Analyze and explain the effects of these major geological processes on human lives, economies, and the environment.
This content is perfectly aligned with Unit 1.4 of the Ethiopian Grade 12 Geography curriculum.
