President Macky Sall announced on Saturday the indefinite postponement of the presidential election, which was originally set to take place on February 25, just hours before official campaigning was due to start. A decision that sparked chaos on the floor of Senegal’s parliament on Monday as lawmakers voted to extend the tenure of President Macky Sall until a new presidential election is held in December. While lawmakers debated the bill, thousands of Senegalese gathered outside the legislative building, protesting. Mobile internet access was also restricted amid growing protests by opposition supporters against the delay.
