Описание: Mamie Chalmers of Detroit was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. When Dr. King came to speak at the 16th Street Baptist Church to talk about injustices in the city, Mamie and her family were in attendance and decided to join the Children’s Crusade. Mamie was 22 at the time, and along with other protestors, was blasted with a fire hose. That moment was captured by photographer Charles Moore of the Black Star photo service. Published by LIFE magazine, it is one of the most famous images of the Civil Rights Era. The incident left Mamie deaf in one ear. She hopes that the young people of today know and understand what she and countless others were protesting for.”If we can get the younger people… to see what we struggled for 50 years ago, I think they will understand.”
