Operating from 1847 to 1966, the Old Dubbo Gaol is a state heritage-listed site in Dubbo, New South Wales, known for being one of the most complete regional prison complexes in Australia.
Timeline of Development
1847–1848: The site originated as a humble slab-hut courthouse and police lock-up with just two cells and a guard room.
1859: It was officially proclaimed a gaol to allow for the legal detention of prisoners under the Sheriff’s custody.
1871: Construction of the first permanent stone buildings began, marking the start of the gaol as it appears today.
1877–1880: Significant expansions occurred, including the addition of the hospital, kitchen block, perimeter walls, and watchtowers.
1887: Major works were completed, including the female division and a gaoler’s residence. The facility was upgraded from a "Police Gaol" to a "Minor Gaol".
1929: Due to its central location on Macquarie Street, the original western entrance was closed and relocated to the eastern wall to make it less prominent.
1966: The gaol ceased operations as a penal institution on August 19, 1966.
Preservation & Tourism
Following its closure, the NSW Government initially planned to demolish the site for a multi-storey office block. However, local protests led by the Dubbo City Council and historical societies saved the buildings.
1974: Reopened as a museum and tourist attraction after extensive restoration.
Key Historical Features
The Gallows: The gaol houses the largest collection of hangman’s ropes in Australia. Eight men were executed at the gaol between 1877 and 1905, including the notorious Jacky Underwood in 1901.
The Padded Cell: Used for "psychiatric" prisoners or those experiencing mental distress, this cell was recently restored and features a soundscape recreating historical patient logs.
Escape Attempts: The gaol recorded approximately 25 escape attempts, which led to numerous architectural modifications, such as reinforced roofs and modified toilet systems.
Unique Architecture: It is a rare survivor of the "Hay style" country gaol, characterized by its compact layout and central watchtower that overlooks the entire precinct.
