Today was one of those brutal days at sea that truly tests your grit, patience, and seamanship. Captain Paul and his twin brother Pete, aboard the 65’ Hatteras LRC Diadromous, encountered some of the roughest conditions of the journey along the Pacific coast of Mexico. To make matters worse, our state-of-the-art Sleipner Vector Fins — designed to stabilize the yacht in open water — completely failed at the worst possible time.
As the seas grew angrier and a storm system closed in, the crew made the tough call: it’s time to head in. No regrets, but no sense risking lives for the schedule either. This is what real offshore boating looks like — unpredictable, demanding, and not for the faint of heart.
This 65’ Hatteras had recently undergone major upgrades, including to its engines and stabilizer systems, but sometimes, even the best gear lets you down. The goal was to push up the coast and deliver her to her new owner in Seattle, Washington — but today, the sea had other plans.
