Local health experts warn about BA.2, the new COVID-19 variant

Описание: As we’ve seen with every other covid variant up this point, health leaders are continuing to learn more everyday.

So far, we’re seeing that BA.2 has been found in about 17 states, but it’s still early so cases are still very low.

Miami Valley Hospital Chief Medical Officer Dr. Roberto Colon tells us as we’ve seen with covid, it takes a little bit of time until health experts get a full understanding of the new variant.

But he said what we know so far, BA.2 is very closely related to the original omicron strain.

“There is a possibility that this may be even easier to spread than what we are seeing around which could explain why some areas around the world are seeing some resurgence in the numbers. There's so far does not appear to be any evidence to show that this is any more severe or causing any different of a disease then what we had been seeing," Dr. Colon said. "There is a concern that this may be a little bit harder to detect because some of the mutations that we are seeing on the surface may not allow all the PCR tests to detect this quite as easily as we were seeing with the Omicron.”
