Congress, the courts, and the president, equal in power, each able to check the others. Today, a sitting United States senator was asked to do his part of that job, and he told a reporter, on camera, that he couldn’t. 👇

The context: Senator John Cornyn was one of two Republicans holding up Todd Blanche’s confirmation as Attorney General over Trump’s $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund,” the one critics warned could funnel taxpayer money to allies, including January 6th defendants. Blanche agreed to kill the fund, Cornyn dropped his objection, and the nomination advanced. But Trump has publicly said he still wants the fund back. So a reporter asked Cornyn about that, and here’s what he said: “There’s nothing we could do to rein in the president when he said he likes the fund and he wishes it still exists. But the fact of the matter, it’s dead, and that’s all we could do under these circumstances.”

“There’s nothing we could do to rein in the president.” From a senator. Reining in the president is, quite specifically, the job. It’s why the branch exists. Cornyn could have voted no. He could have written legislation. He could have used the confirmation as leverage. Instead, the posture, in his own words about Blanche, was that they had “no alternative but to take his word.”

Even Rolling Stone put it plainly: there is, in fact, plenty Senate Republicans could do to rein in Trump, and it’s a tragedy they’ve abdicated it because they’re scared of making him mad. MAGA loves to mock “No Kings” protests as hysterical. And then a Republican senator describes his relationship to the president exactly the way a subject describes a monarch: there’s nothing we can do. Remember that in November, because the branch that’s supposed to check the president has told you, out loud, that it won’t. 🇺🇸
