In September 2025, Himachal Pradesh's Spiti Valley was designated as India’s first Cold Desert Biosphere Reserve under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme. Located in the trans-Himalayan region at 3,300–6,600m, this 777,000-hectare site protects a unique, fragile ecosystem featuring snow leopards, ibex, and ancient Tibetan Buddhist culture.
Key Aspects of the Spiti Cold Desert Biosphere Reserve:
Location & Scope: Covers 7,770 sq. km in the Lahaul-Spiti district, including the Pin Valley National Park, Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary, and Chandratal.
Ecological Significance: The region is a high-altitude, arid landscape with extreme temperatures, yet supports 732 vascular plant species and unique fauna like the snow leopard, Himalayan wolf, and blue sheep.
UNESCO Recognition: Announced at the 37th session of the MAB Council in China, it joins the global network of over 700 biosphere reserves.
Cultural Heritage: Known as the "middle land" between Tibet and India, the area is dotted with ancient, high-altitude monasteries like Tabo (founded in 996 CE) and Key Monastery.
Conservation & Tourism: The status aims to boost sustainable eco-tourism, including stargazing, guided biodiversity walks, and community-run homestays, while preserving the traditional lifestyles of12,000+ local residents.
This designation highlights the need to protect the area's fragile soil, glaciers, and biodiversity while promoting research and sustainable development.
