On the holy Appearance Day of our beloved Guru Maharaj, I feel inspired to share a very personal story that unfolded in my own family, which still gives me goosebumps whenever I recall it. It is the story of how my father, by Krishna’s arrangement, received the ultimate gift of his life — initiation from HH Gopal Krishna Goswami Maharaj — at the very last breath of his journey.

 

🕉️ The longing for shelter

In 2017, during the sacred Purushottam Maas in Vrindavan, my father and mother both attended a month-long Bhagavat Katha by HG Ramakant Prabhuji. At that time, they also had the fortune of receiving daily association of HG Krishnanand Prabhuji (ISKCON Chowpatty), who spoke every evening from Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita. Deeply inspired, they both enrolled for the ISKCON Disciple Course at Vrindavan.

 

Afterwards, under the counseling and guidance of HG Raghunandan Ram Prabhuji (ISKCON Mira Road), they filled their initiation forms. But my father’s heart was restless. Again and again, he would ask, “Prabhuji, how soon can I get initiation from HH Gopal Krishna Goswami Maharaj? I feel I have very little time left in this body. Please make the process fast.” Yet there was no visibility on when it would happen.

 

Despite his health challenges, he became very sincere in his spiritual practices. Encouraged by HG Anand Vrindavan Prabhuji, he took the determination to “finish everything in this very lifetime.” He began waking up at 3 am daily, and would start chanting immediately. His faith in the Holy Name became his anchor.

 

🌺 Krishna’s invisible arrangements

Little did we know how Krishna was arranging everything behind the scenes. The connections flowed miraculously — from our first shiksha guru HG Achyut Gopal Prabhu, to HG Shubha Vilas Prabhu, to HG Rishi Kumar Prabhuji, and finally, directly to Guru Maharaj. Looking back, it is so clear that Krishna Himself was making the arrangements for my father’s deepest desire to be fulfilled.

 

✨ The final test of longing

In 2019, during Sharad Purnima, at the very start of Kartik month — Krishna’s most beloved month, my father was admitted to the hospital. Even in sickness, he was steady in bhakti: offering deep-daan every morning and evening, praying to Lord Nrsimhadev, hearing Srila Prabhupada’s chanting, and himself engaging in constant harinam.

 

On 7th November 2019, around 11 am, his heartbeat suddenly dropped — 45… 40… 35… Doctors rushed into the ICU, pushed us out, and locked the door. Me and my sister, we stood outside crying and chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra with all our heart:

🌸 The miracle

At that very moment, my phone — which was on silent — lit up. To my shock, it read: “Gopal Krishna Goswami Maharaj calling.”

With trembling hands I picked it up. Maharaj asked, “Where is your father? I want to initiate him.” I replied, “Maharaj, he is inside the locked ICU.”

Maharaj, amidst his yatra with 6000 devotees in Dwarka, said calmly, “Record this call. I will initiate him now. Play this recording to him once the door opens.”

Right there, Maharaj compassionately performed the initiation ceremony, gave my father the name HG Priya Mohan Das, and personally chanted the Hare Krishna Mahamantra for him.

And then… the moment Maharaj hung up the phone, the ICU doors opened. The doctors came out and said, “He is no more.”

I rushed to his bedside, placed the phone near him, and let the recording of Maharaj’s voice — giving him his name and chanting the Mahamantra — continue to play. My father left this world hearing his Guru’s voice, as a freshly initiated disciple, embraced by the Holy Name.

🌼 Auspicious timings only Krishna could arrange

He was admitted on Sharad Purnima, the start of Kartik Maas.

He spent his last days in deep-daan, Nrsimha prayers, and satatam harinam.

And he departed on Dev Uthani Ekadashi — the very day Lord Vishnu awakens from His cosmic rest.

Can anyone doubt this was not Krishna’s hand?

🙇‍♂️ The lesson etched in my heart

Through this pastime, I realized:

The Lord in the disciple’s heart speaks to the Lord in the Guru’s heart.

Guru never abandons a sincere soul, even if doors are locked by the world — Guru finds a way.

The Holy Name, sadhana, and longing for initiation prepare the soul for its final journey.

Initiation is not a ritual; it is the soul’s eternal lifeline back to Krishna.

 
🌸 On this holy day of Guru Maharaj’s Vyasa Puja (Appearance Day, 19th August 2025, Ekadashi), I bow down in gratitude. May we always remember that Krishna and Guru Maharaj’s mercy can break through all barriers — ICU doors, sickness, even the moment of death — to carry the soul safely to the lotus feet of the Lord.
