The story of Ancient India started in the Indus Valley. In early 2nd millennium BC, the Aryans came into India, and they settled around the Ganges valley, and the Aryans affected the whole course of Indian civilization, especially the religious and social institutions. In addition to the Aryans, there are two ancient texts that are important to understanding Ancient India: the Rig Veda and Upanishads. The Rig Veda reveals a lot about the Aryans and their religious practices, such as the utmost importance of sacrifice, their polytheistic worldview, and the social caste system. The Rig Veda was, in essence, the foundation of Ancient Hinduism. On the contrary, the Upanishads came about as a sort of retaliation against the Vedic religion, i.e., Ancient Hinduism. The Upanishads basically turned away from the basic teachings of the Rig Veda such as its central sacrificial concepts, and instead introduced a very ascetic lifestyle and a monotheistic worldview. From this turn away from the traditional Vedic religion came about other religions such as Jainism and Buddhism.
I am not a scholar, but a normal guy who wants to understand the world (and myself) better. Please note that ongoing scholarly research may update what is now accepted as common knowledge.
