I’ve said this before, especially to longer-time visitors, but I’ll repeat it here: I believe the overhead press is one of the purest expressions of whole-body strength, and it deserves its place in the royalty of foundational lifts alongside the squat and the deadlift.
There is no other compound movement that requires you to transmit force cleanly from the feet, through the torso, and out through the hands in quite the same way. Whether you arrive overhead via a strict press, push press, clean, or snatch, the common denominator is the same — the body’s frame must be strong enough to sustain load overhead with integrity.
That said, this isn’t a gym-bro argument.
Time spent building body connections, breath control, elastic pressure, and power release measurably improves your ability to lift and sustain weight. It takes time, there are levels to it, and it’s not flashy — but the carryover is significant.
This kind of training doesn’t replace raw strength or conditioning. It allows you to use them better — whether that’s under a bar, on a heavy bag, or in martial contexts where reading intent, sticking, striking, and balance actually matter.
