Wazir Gul was one of the more than 120,000 Afghans evacuated safely in the chaotic last days of the nearly two-decade U.S. war in Afghanistan. He had served with U.S. forces as an armed security officer. Four days after his plane left Kabul, the last American troops left. The “forever war” was over.
Tens of thousands of other Afghans who had worked for the U.S. didn’t make it out, despite a pledge from President Joe Biden just two months earlier: “Those who helped us are not going to be left behind.”
Wazir had not been “left behind,” but that was thanks to a former staff sergeant named Sam Lerman. This is their story.
