神秘の湧水 ～世界文化遺産構成資産・天然記念物・名水百選・県富岳百景選定地～
その昔、忍野湖は富士山の噴火活動を何度も経て、徐々に富士 裾野と御坂山系との狭間を水触、掘削排水され長い期間の後、ついに湖は涸れました。しかし。富士山の伏流水に水源を発する湧水池がいくつか残りました。
その代表的な湧水池が「忍野八海」です。
　富士山に降り積もる雪解け水が、地下の不透水層という溶岩の間で数十年の歳月をかけてろ過され、澄み切った水となりました。美しく神秘的であり、移り変わる四季に彩られた富士を水面に映しこんだ姿は訪れた人々に水本来の姿と護るべき美しさをそっと訴えているようにも感じられます。
　忍野八海は「形状、水質、水量、保全状況、景観、仏教思想（富士信仰）など」の観点から、昭和9年(1934年)に国の天然記念物に指定され、昭和60年(1985年)に、環境庁から全国名水百選に選定されました。また、平成6年(1993年)には、県富岳百景選定地にも指定されました。
