Creating a Custom Writing System - Easy Tutorial for Beginners

Start by defining the goal of your script. Will it be a script that will be made out of geometry, or will it be a completely abstract, fantasy writing system?

First of all, you should define what letters will be used. Let's use the order of Latin script. To make some custom variations of the first letter, try using this template. You have those four shapes and try to define letters with different shapes. You can order the alphabet letters like this or choose a different order.

If you choose to make a script with both uppercase and lowercase letters, make the lowercase letter different in order to match it with the uppercase letter. Try to play with the first six letters.

Put some symbol to the bottom, make it upside down or duplicate the symbol, if your language has double-U as a letter or sound. With this practice, you can make an entire writing system for your language.

I have designed a script by using this symbol as the main form, but I have modified it and made variants out of the same letter. The scripts looks like a combination of Georgian or Armenian. The letters M and N are mirrored and while G looks similar, it only has one difference in the line, it isn't a straight line like on the letter N. The other letters are made to resemble the mouth shape when pronounced.

When you finish the main writing system, try to make the cursive version for writing and import it into a drawing software.
