In Ladakh’s breathtaking Nubra Valley, there’s a secret village named Turtuk — one of India’s northernmost settlements and a gateway to the ancient Silk Route. Home to the Balti people, Turtuk preserves centuries of art, culture, and mountain life that few travellers ever experience.

At its heart stands the Balti Heritage Museum and Cultural Centre, a 140-year-old home built by Seth Ghulam Haider Ashoor, now lovingly restored through Lak-boba, a local tradition of neighbours helping neighbours. Inside, carved wood, stone, and woollen crafts tell stories of Balti resilience and tradition.
