Forming off the coast of Africa and strengthening from 80 to 165 mph in a matter of hours, it tore through Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti, and the Bahamas before charging up the eastern seaboard of the United States and into Canada. 603 people lost their lives. More than 550 of them in Haiti alone.

Through the personal footage and firsthand accounts of those caught in its path, this episode traces Matthew's journey from the Caribbean to the Carolinas. Meteorologist Brian Norcross goes on air with an urgent plea for Florida residents to evacuate. Hurricane tracker Mark Sudith races ahead of the storm to set up measurement equipment on the Daytona Beach coastline. Tony Kazazza loads his truck and drives inland, unsure whether he will have a home to return to. Jimmy Anthony ignores the evacuation order and rides the storm out alone in a house with boarded-up windows. And in North Carolina, a man uses a drone to rescue a neighbor trapped on his rooftop by rising floodwater.
In Haiti, volunteer nurse Wanda Teima is among the first to land after the storm. What she finds is a country with no infrastructure left to absorb a disaster of this scale.
