Article 33 confers power on the Parliament to determine to what extent any of the rights conferred by Part III shall, in their application to the members of the Armed Forces, be restricted or abrogated so as to ensure the proper discharge of duties and maintenance of discipline amongst them.

This Act 'The Armed Tribunal Act' may be called the Army Act, 1950. 2. It shall come into force on such date as the Central Government may, by notifications in the Official Gazette, appoint in this behalf. The AA came into force on 22 Jul 1950.

A court-martial is empowered to determine the guilt of members of the armed forces subject to military law, and, if the defendant is found guilty, to decide upon punishment. In addition, courts-martial may be used to try prisoners of war for war crimes.
