review.chicagobooth.edu | Over the past several decades, the top of the US income distribution has earned a greater and greater share of the national income, which has created political tensions and fueled debate over the repercussions of income inequality. One result, says Chicago Booth's Amir Sufi, is that the wealthy are saving much more of their income than everyone else, resulting in what he and his coauthors call the "saving glut of the rich." This, in turn, has encouraged less-wealthy households, and the US government, to borrow more.
Although a prominent concern about income inequality is fairness, Sufi says that the issue goes beyond that: income inequality is holding back the entire economy.
